The Worst Character in Until Dawn
As someone who has played this game and seen most if not all deaths, and endings, I feel like I am qualified to some degree to say who the worst character is. This is about facts and not opinion, each character has done and said things that can be up for judgment, but there is one single scene that determines the line between sass and crazy.
Spoilers up ahead!!
Let's talk about each death in the game, cause I think there will be one in particular that stands out.
1. Beth dies at the beginning of the game and it is unavoidable. There was no way to change the outcome.
2. Matt dies by smashing his head from the elk running him over (failed QTE). People can fall or panic in certain situations.
3. Matt is impaired from a windigo (lack of having a gun or failed QTE) not knowing there's an actual enemy, it makes sense to not potentially grab a flare gun.
4. Emily's eyes are ripped out (Failed QTE) you might trip in a panic situation.
5. Emily's eyes are ripped out (Failed multiple QTE) maybe you're super clumsy not your fault.
6. Emily crushed (Failed QTE) you should probably go to the gym but that doesn't make you a bad person.
7. The Flame thrower guy gets sliced by Winigo (Unavoidable) poor guy was probably destined to die on that mountain.
8. Chris is decapitated by a windigo (Failed QTE) maybe go to the shooting range to work on your aim.
9. We will come back to this one.
10. Emily is shot by Mike (passed QTE) not knowing what is attacking them whether or not it can be transferred, scared that Emily might kill them, Mike panics but that choice is yours. The kill is thinking for the whole group and he does not make this strictly on his own, meaning it does not entirely reflect his choices as a character.
11-14. Ashley or Chris is decapitated by a windigo (Choices made in the house) none of these choices are characteristically based all just locking the door or investigating a noise.
15. Josh was killed by Windigo (did not find notebook) he was lost in himself since his sisters died.
16. The rest of the kills are either failed QTE or rush decisions before the final explosion in the house. None of which are purposeful just trying to make it out alive.
Now to go back to number 9. To preface this scene I will explain the butterfly effect before it. In one scene you as Chris are faced with a choice to kill Josh or Ashley. It is a fake setup made by Josh and no matter what you choose it pretends to kill Josh. This one decision reveals the true colors of Ashely. Even though she was never gonna die, the idea of Chris killing her turns her dark. Later when Chris is being chased by a windigo, depending on the choice you made previously. Though she has plenty of time to let you in, if you even think about killing her, she will shut the door in your face and watch you as you die from the Windego. Says nothing to the others and shows no remorse or reaction to Chris's death. This is the only kill in the game that is fully intentional, held on to with a grudge. It is the only kill that is based on character and not fear or panic.
In conclusion, Ashley is the worst, or most evil, character in Until Dawn. She deserves no remorse and I happily sent her to death down the hallway in the cave. Before discovering this she was never my least favorite person, but the fact that she let and willingly chose on her own to let a friend of hers die makes her the absolute worst character in the game.
